Let us get to know Shelly better.

Q: For our readers who might not know, could you introduce yourself?

A: Thank you for having me. I'm Shelly-Ann Mohammed, currently serving as the President & CEO of LA&CCA. I founded the Latin American & Caribbean Counsel Association, aiming to elevate the professional standards and champion law reform in the region.

Q: Your career seems extensive. Can you share some highlights from your former roles?

A: Certainly. I was the Head of ACCA, Latin America & Caribbean where I led the strategy, operations and team across 44 countries in the region. Prior to this, I was the President & CEO at the Association of Caribbean Corporate Counsel. There, my role was to frame strategies for our region working in partnership with international and regional law firms to build the capabilities of lawyers in the region. The vision was to prepare the region for an ever-evolving future, be it in terms of regulatory frameworks, technology, or other challenges and to ensure the next generation of lawyers were given equal access to resources and training.

Q: Your legal background sounds fascinating. Could you delve a bit into that?

A: Of course. I had the opportunity to work with three renowned AmLaw 250 firms in New York and Connecticut and am a member of the Bar Associations of Connecticut and Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, I served as the Group Chief Legal Officer for one of the Caribbean's largest conglomerates, which gave me profound insights into managing global legal risk. I have continued to work as external counsel for a few global companies.

Q: Are there any other significant roles you hold currently besides LA&CCA?

A: At the moment, I lead ACCA Caribbean & Latin America. However, I'll be starting full-time at LA&CCA starting October 1, 2023. I operate as the external Chief Legal Officer for a global organization and lecture part time at universities in the UK and Latin America on legal and business risks involved when operating in the region.

Q: Your academic journey sounds truly commendable. Can you share more about it?

A: Thank you. I've been privileged to have the opportunity to attend and learn from some of the world's best institutions. I graduated with an MBA and a Masters in Global Business Studies where I was a Merit Scholar at Oxford University. I studied for Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, graduating with honors, a Bachelor of Law at the University of Exeter, graduating with honors and a Masters in Law at the University of Connecticut where I was a Dean’s scholar. I was also fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to study Comparative Law at the University of Paris. I had the opportunity to travel and live in Latin America, Canada, Europe, the United States and the Caribbean and as a result am conversant in French, Spanish and Italian.

Q: You're deeply rooted in creating positive societal impacts. Where does that passion stem from?

A: My passion for creating positive societal impacts is deeply rooted in a lifelong commitment that originated from a desire since childhood to help the less fortunate and ensure that others had access to the opportunities that I was fortunate enough to receive. From a young age, I felt a profound urge to give back to my community and witnessed firsthand the transformative effect that access to education, mentorship, and support systems had on individuals' lives.

This commitment led me to found three non-profit organizations focused on lawyers, doctors, and entrepreneurs. Through these ventures, my aim has always been to equip professionals in the Caribbean with the right tools, knowledge, and strategies to shine. These organizations are a testament to my unwavering belief that providing individuals with the necessary support and access to resources can empower them to overcome obstacles and make a meaningful difference.

My passion to create positive social impact continues to evolve over the years but remains driven by the conviction that, with the right support and resources, individuals can achieve their fullest potential. I see it as my duty to contribute to bridging the gap and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the chance to thrive in a more equitable and inclusive society.

Q: Have you received any accolades or recognitions that stand out to you?

A: One that particularly resonates with me is being identified by Wilton Park as a next generation leader in the Caribbean. Being a part of the Caribbean 2030 Network, alongside some of the most influential people in the region, has been truly humbling.

Q: Lastly, what vision do you hold for LA&CCA under your leadership?

A: I envision LA&CCA as a beacon of hope for the legal profession in Latin America and the Caribbean. My focus will be on championing the rights of legal professionals, improving access to resources, and initiating law reform processes. Ultimately, I hope our endeavors will lead to sustained economic growth in the region.

Conclusion

Shelly-Ann Mohammed’s journey, passion, and vision are both inspiring and instrumental for the evolving landscape of the legal profession in the region. It's evident that with her at the helm, the future looks bright for legal professionals and organizations.
